Welcome to N4C

N4C stands for Networking for Communications Challenged Communities: Architecture, Test Beds and Innovative Alliances. This FP7 project emanates from two environments. On the one hand a local initiative investigating how new technology can support reindeer husbandry and other traditional industry in northern Scandinavia and, on the other hand, a group of people active in the Delay Tolerant Research Group within the IRTF. Through building a European Consortium and with support from an international board of advisors, the goal has been achieved: a major step forwards for networking technology that operates with affordable costs and reaches were it is needed without demands on heavy and invasive infra structure investments.

The InterPlanetary Networking Special Interest Group (IPNSIG) aims to realize a functional and scalable system of interplanetary data communications before the year 2020. Membership in IPNSIG is international and interdisciplinary. The IPNSIG has promoted the eLearning-DTN courses that now are available. Read more about it:


SF.JPGStephen Farrell, Trinity College Dublin, is Co-chair of the DTNRG and Security Area Director in the IETF. Dr. Farrell was vital in the development and design of N4C. In the project he lead the DTN software development and co-worked with Elwyn Davies, Folly consulting, who directed the N4C System Architecture work package.

The N4C future Internet vision has been to take a

major step towards Internetaccess for all, through a

research effort to support the extension of Internet or

Internet-like communication capabilities into regions that

are ‛communications challenged’.

The results of the N4C FP7 project (Networking for Communications Challenged Communities: Architecture, Test Beds and Innovative Alliances) allow to take communications (e-mail, education contents, e-health, among others) to remote areas where it is not economically possible to use conventional approaches.

This technology is available for free and could have a major impact on the life of people and business located in these remote areas. These networks can be made operational by

individuals or companies that wish to provide communications services to these remote areas. The available technology may stimulate the local economy through the emergence of small business.

Marija Zlata Božnar has a PhD from University of Ljubljana, Faculty for Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Together with Primož Mlakar she is the owner of MEIS d.o.o.

In N4C she was the leader of the work package ‘Tests and validation in two remote test beds’ and together with the colleagues in MEIS she developed the Slovenian N4C test bed.

The Slovenian test bed has been presented as an offer to the FIRE test bed federation, as a complement to the large scale FIRE facilities for the traditionally connected regions. Test bed offer


Avri Doria started the N4C way of working, where Internet research is combined with real life tests in remote and rural test beds.

Early in the research process researchers take their results to the field sites for trials in real situations. They use what they learned for analysis and the new results are brought to the test beds again, and so on. In N4C six test cycles were performed from summer 2008 to winter 2010/2011.
